Amber: A Comprehensive Excursion for Members of the Volyn Regional Ecology and Nature Center

On June 23, a comprehensive excursion was organized for members of the Volyn Regional Ecology and Nature Center of the Volyn Regional Council. Director of ME “Volynpryrodresurs” Anatolii Kapustiuk guided the group through the amber extraction process in the Manevychi area. The guests also visited the Amber Factory, where they had the chance to see unique specimens with their own eyes.

The students learned about the company’s mission – legal amber extraction carried out in compliance with environmental standards. Kapustiuk explained that illegal amber mining, once widespread in the region, caused severe environmental damage, including forest die-off due to root system destruction, as illegal diggers had no concern for the consequences. Legal extraction by ME “Volynpryrodresurs,” combined with land reclamation, is not only a way to support regional and state budgets but also a means of protecting nature. The children were shown how crucial it is to restore soil cover, replant vegetation, and create favorable conditions for the return of biodiversity.

“From the land area where illegal miners had operated, our enterprise managed to extract another 8 tons of amber from 11 hectares, even though the territory was considered depleted. But we had to demonstrate how proper extraction and reclamation should be carried out,” – noted Anatolii Kapustiuk.

During their visit to the Amber Factory the guests had the opportunity to observe different amber fractions and learn about all the details of the purification process.
